the original was done by Big Mama Thornton in 1952, but this is a 1965 updated version she is doing.
The 1952 version is available on youtube. If it is removed I will put it up myself some day.

The original singer of Piece of My Heart was Erma Franklin, Aretha's sister. Although, Willie May Thornton was a HUGE influence on Janis Joplin. They performed together once in San Fransisco. Peace.

Hey, all you Elvis mashers and Big Mama mashers, let's look at the reality here. In my eyes, Big Mama did it first, she had a ton of soul, and sang her ass off, then Elvis did a more "rock and roll" version of the song, that I personally like, but they're two differen versions. Let's be fair. They both did a good job in my book, but by all means let's give Big Mama some credit for writing it and performing it first. Marc Trainor.
