Patti Smith "You Light Up My Life" on "Kids Are People Too"

Uploaded by: postingoldtapes
Video Description:
I'm going through my music videotapes from the 1980s and posting things that I don't find here currently. Maybe only one or two people might be looking for some of these, but those people should be very happy.
The American Broadcasting Company used to have a show back in the 80s called "Kids Are People Too" that had some surprising guests. Patti appeared on it with Joe Brooks and sang his song "You Light Up My Life".

Patti's diversity is proof that passion equals passion, no matter the style or medium. How beautiful is that?

I always despised this idiotic, sappy song...till I heard Patti sing it and now, for me it is beautiful. Long live Patti, she is a spark of hope for us.

This just kills me, I remember sitting on a sunday morning watching this as a teen and thinking she was so totally cool. Years earlier, I remember her playing the Soap Factory and one of my older neighbors was a huge fan. I remember being pissed I was so young Wasn't this in '79 though (as she makes reference to the year)? I was about 13 when I saw this. The show was cheezy but how can ya beat Patti singing this?!?! Love her!

Astonishing. Of ... ( 1 month ago by MacEoin)
Astonishing. Of course, this was 1979, not long after 'Wave', when Smith's hard rock was giving way to something more mushy (though 'Wave' is still a great album). It prefigures her later, utterly awful albums, following her 10-year gap. What's amazing here is that, even if the song is sappy, her voice turns it into something better than its parts. She's not wholly at ease with the kids, but she gives it her best. I'm still waiting for the original album that will put her back on course.

What's "punk" about ... ( 2 weeks ago by trinitymike)
What's "punk" about this is that she essentially says "F#@#$ you" to pre-conceived notions of what she SHOULD be singing..And that attitude was what punk was about: rejecting what you were SUPPOSED to look like, sound like, what music you were supposed to like.
