This was Written on and about the runcorn Bridge (just outside Liverpool) at the time of the Toxteth Riots (1981) hence the title 'Bridge over troubled water'. Another of theie hits Homeward bound was also written just 5 mins away from the bridge, at a railway station that has now unfortunately closed!

Apologies - I should have been clearer - The Toxteth Riots are Documented as 1981, as this was when it reached a crescendo, However he racial disharmony was present throughout the 70's-Im sure its well documented that this song was written about Liverpool/toxteth/Runcorn Bridge - just google it! And check out the Train station that 'Homeward Bound was writen at -think it was called 'Hale' - there was loads of campaigns to save it as it was famed through the S&G link!

Hi Lynne.
The song is about the strength of a friendship...being someone's bridge over troubled water. It may well have been adopted as a soothing anthem about the Toxteth riots, but was certainly not written in, or about, Cheshire/Merseyside.
The Homeward Bound legend is apparently true. I had heard of it.
