Nya. I think your observation os his deadpan expression is astute, but your evaluation of his lack of happiness as far too morose. He became cantankerous and lost all form in older age, but he enjoyed chess. However, you're right. I'm glad someone else mentioned that, his expresion when the host annouced his name -- I thought he was concerned that the "questioning game" was interrupted, personally. The descent of Bobby's mental stability was affected through a great many things - genetics for example - not forgetting he was always very particular, even at the height of his powers. Personally I believe the primary cause was the unfathomable strain placed upon his shoulders; a weight that contained the hopes of the American people in there desire to see their man victorious over the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Any lesser men than both Fischer and Spassky would have walked away.

(carrying on from my comment below) Both Fischer and Spassky are heroes in my eyes for having the courage to stick to their game and ultimately their convictions, perhaps the former more so. For all those who do not understand the Bobby Fischer we followers love - hold you're judgement before you learn the ineffable beauty of his life: a constant struggle to reach his potential; a summit which he was never to reach but in his efforts left his powerful mark upon the world.

Bobby's uncle /his real father's brother/ was an artcollector worth 600 hundred million dollars, the russians stole it during WWII.
Currently the whole collection is in Russia. Since his uncle died without children, poor Bobby newer knew what a fortune was waiting for him.
Probably he never knew it...who knows.

i would not pity him, as most of the things he did he did on purpose and on his own decision.
he died 64, which is not that old, and that may be regretted, but he was strong chess players, but decided to leave chess, which reduced his reputation and his merits.
he was special, but not an idol, and i guess he never wnated to be abn idol, so let's rest him in peace.
